Abolition Means No More War: FREE PALESTINE NOW!

November 1, 2023 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Prison industrial complex (PIC) abolitionists have always understood the work to dismantle the PIC to be connected to global movements against war, militarism, and colonialism. In the past few weeks, we’ve seen mass mobilization for solidarity with the Palestinian people as they face one of the deadliest assaults by the Israeli military in its history.

On Wednesday, November 1, 2023, join us for a critical discussion on the ongoing war on Palestine. Critical Resistance’s Campaigns Director, Mohamed Shehk, will be joined by Dr. Angela Y Davis, Lara Kiswani (Executive Director of the Arab Resource and Organizing Center), Stefanie Fox (Executive Director of Jewish Voice for Peace), and Nadine Naber (INCITE! Women of Color against Violence – National) to help us understand the situation on the ground in Palestine, how our organizations and people everywhere can mount effective resistance to the genocidal war against Palestinians, and how we can use abolitionist strategies such as dismantle-change-build, divest/invest & “defund,” and “shrink and starve” to do so.

RSVP for the online event here.

Aiming to contribute to fighting against war-making more broadly, this event will examine the relationship of the PIC with Israel’s apartheid and occupation of Palestine, and why abolitionists must strongly mobilize in this time, by bringing together experts on PIC abolition, solidarity, liberation movements, war and militarism to:

  • Unpack the relationship of racist and imperialist structures that support the ongoing Israeli occupation in Palestine
  • Expose the Israeli imprisonment system including Gaza’s forced configuration into an open air prison
  • Disrupt Israel’s role in worldwide repression of marginalized peoples and revolutionary struggle
  • And interrupt the media’s role in criminalization, inciting more violence, and maintaining systems of oppression by empowering colonial ideology through Islamaphobia, Anti-Arab racism, and anti-semitism

…And all the while discussing concrete strategies for how we can fight back.

In the last few weeks alone, the apartheid-state of Israel has killed over 8,000 Palestinians in Gaza and wounded over 18,000 while the conditions in the 16-year-long blockade continue to worsen for over 2 million Palestinians as the healthcare system in Gaza has completely collapsed. In only two weeks, Israel has doubled the number of imprisoned Palestinians, as the war has claimed 10,000 prisoners of war (POWs) by the Israeli Prison Services (IPS). Meanwhile, the US government has been giving $3.8 billion in military aid per year to Israel unconditionally, which has funded over 6,000 Israeli bombs dropped on Palestinians in only six days, almost as many bombs as the US dropped on Afghanistan in one year of war.

As abolitionists, we know our praxis requires that we both sharpen our analysis while contributing materially to those struggling in Gaza.

Middle East Children’s Alliance (MECA) is on the ground distributing humanitarian aid and relief to those in need in Gaza. This event will also be a fundraiser for MECA. Donate before, during or after the event here.

Haymarket Books will be hosting the event
and live-streaming on Youtube.

*Closed Captioning, ASL, and Spanish Interpretation will be provided.

RSVP on Haymarket’s eventbrite to receive the link to join on November 1!

Image Description to post in Alternate text and/or captions:
  • Dark gray-blue flyer. A collage of animations depicting internationalist and abolitionist organizing and resistance, including a Palestinian solidarity rally in San Francisco with thousands of people, many of whom are waving Palestinian flags (black, white, green, and red), to mobilizations to stop Urban shield or block the apartheid-Israeli “Zim” ship at the Oakland Ports, as well as anti-Zionist  and anti-imperialist Jewish activists mobilizing to Washington DC most recently with a banner that reads: “Jews Say Ceasefire Now.” Underneath the collage is the event title and description in white, blue, gold and light red text (alternating colors for emphasis on organization names). The text reads: “Abolition Means No More War: FREE PALESTINE NOW! With Angela Davis, Arab Resource & Organizing Center (AROC), Jewish Voice for Peace, INCITE!, and Critical Resistance.
