In the past year as maternal mortality rates in the US have skyrocketed with Black women more than twice as likely to die than white women\, alongside a record number of anti-transgender bills progressing through legislative processes\, thousands have organized to defend abortion access state to state\, from fundraising drives for abortion funds to providing clinic defense support\, working to advance legislative protections locally\, and more. \nJust as the fight to defend abortion is not new\, struggles against various forms of reproductive harm inside and outside prisons has been a major priority of imprisoned people\, anti-prison advocates\, and abolitionists for decades.  Reproductive oppression is a cornerstone of the PIC. Yet the two struggles–reproductive justice and PIC abolition–have emerged somewhat distinct alongside one another as opposed to mutual\, intersecting pathways toward collective liberation and life-affirming care for all. The Texas legislature is trying to stop this win from advancing by passing laws to prohibit police defunding. \nTo push forward and build wider support\, Austin organizations including Communities of Color United\, ICE out of Austin\, Grassroots Leadership and Texas Harm Reduction Alliance are hosting the world premiere of Re-Visions of Abolition: from Critical Resistance to a New Way of Life\, a film by Setsu Shigematsu on Friday\, June 25. \nIf in or around Austin\, join us for an in-person film screening and celebration\, or if located elsewhere\, join the party virtually. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual fundraising event\, this year commemorating Juneteenth & featuring an abolitionist conversation with Charlene Carruthers and Marc Lamont Hill. \nReserve your virtual seat & buy your tickets TODAY! \n  \n \n  \n \nTwo and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued ordering states in the confederacy to release their slaves\, Black people in Texas achieved their liberation from chattel bondage. On June 19\,1865\, General Order Number 3 was read from the Ashton Villa balcony in Galveston\, Texas\, that demanded that slaveholders free their slaves. That day\, Juneteenth\, has become an annual occasion for celebration\, reflection\, and education about the meaning of freedom and the on-going\, universal struggle for liberation from domination. \nThese questions about the true meaning of freedom are more relevant than ever to the work of abolitionists and those working to eliminate the prison industrial complex (PIC) and its attendant harms. To explore the legacy of Juneteenth and ongoing struggles for Black (and international) liberation\, CR is happy to host a conversation between two prominent Black thought leaders and firebrands\, Charlene Carruthers (BYP100 cofounder) and Marc Lamont Hill (BET news host). \nDuring what’s sure to be an engaging evening\, we will see Charlene and Marc in discussion about inspirational histories in light of contemporary abolitionist movements. We look forward to sharing space with you all during this important discussion to connect the movements of our past to the current political landscape in Oakland and beyond. She is the founder of the Chicago Center for Leadership and Transformation and author of Unapologetic: A Black\, Queer and Feminist Mandate for Radical Movements. He is currently the host of BET News and BLACK COFFEE\, as well as a Temple University Professor. DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the release of The Abolitionist’s next issue\, “Life After the PIC\,” we’re throwing two launch events. \nFirst up\, there’s a night of conversation with contributors to the issue\, at Eastside Cultural Center (2277 International Blvd.\, Oakland) on February 15 starting at 7 p.m. \n \nAnd then\, on Friday\, February 24 starting at 10 p.m.\, come dance to some sweet soul classics at Sissy Strut (Underground SF\, 424 Haight St.\, San Francisco). Thanks to TheHandsome YoungMen for inviting us to be a part of the party. \n \nBoth events have a suggested donation of $5. All proceeds will go to supporting the paper and continuing to get it inside to over 2\,500 people for free. Join us!
