SAN FRANCISCO—The potential opening of a new jail has been met with protest in San Francisco.

Critical Resistance, the group spearheading the opposition of the new jail, has argued that the development is an unnecessary waste of taxpayer dollars.

Citing San Francisco’s low incarceration rate, protestors are arguing that the money that will be poured into opening the new jail could be better appropriated in funding mental health diversion programs and bail reform.

“We don’t need to build another jail wasting $290 million on something that will be unnecessary,” said Critical Resistance spokesman Mohamed Shehk . “And as we have seen, putting up a new jail just means its going to be filled, imprisoning more people.”
