CR Los Angeles is currently working hard with the LA No More Jails Coalition and the Antelope Valley Peoples Coalition to put a stop to the LA County Sheriff’s Department’s $3.7 Billion plan to construct approximately 6,000 new cages in LA.

The next month is a crucial moment to turn out against the jail plan and block the Board of Supervisors from moving forward on the next step forconstruction.

We are fighting hard and are building resources and to help resist this plan – check out our new Intro to the Jail Fight Zine and the new Million Dollar Hoods maps to see how much the Sheriffs are spending to lock up people in your neighborhood.

But we’ve still got a lot to do if we want to stop this Jail Plan! Turn out and plug in to the below events and volunteer opportunities.

What is going on?

Let’s spell out how much money that is – 3,700,000,000 (and probably many more) dollars to be spent on imprisoning more black and brown people.
The LA County Board of Supervisors is preparing to approve the first phase of this plan – construction of a new women’s jailin the Antelope Valley after a limited and problematic environmental review. One aspect of our campaign to stopconstruction of the Mira Loma women’sjail is to fight the jail on environmental grounds, citing issues with its constructionand operation in the areas of water supply and quality, air quality, and hazardous waste.
We know this women’s jail will not only devastate the environment, but will lock up women, trans, and gender-nonconforming people, resulting in more families and communities being torn apart. Instead we want housing, education, and healthcare – resources that we know to strengthen our communities!

Can you get involved now?

The timeline for the proposed jailconstruction is moving quickly and we have a small window in order to stopthis jail from being built on environmental grounds.

Below are some needs that we have in our campaign, if you or anybody you know would like to help or has access to these please do let us know so that we can strengthen our fight!

  • Interns! – We would love to take on motivated interns to help during this intensive time of struggle!
  • Environmental Science and Policy Expertise
  • Video, Motion Graphics, Infographics Makers and other media creation
  • Legal Representation to challenge the County’s Environmental Review
  • Turn out to actions
  • Donate to CRLA to fight the jail(designate LA Chapter)
