Position Description:

Building People Power (BPP) is developing a vacant 9,000 square foot building at 4400 Telegraph Ave in Oakland, CA into a center for political organizing and education, cultural work, and collective care. Building People Power owns the building and has raised an initial $6 million for renovation and construction. After renovation, the space will house the offices for social justice organizations including Critical Resistance (CR), a national grassroots organization working to abolish the prison industrial complex (PIC) and movement partners, as well as event and meeting spaces. Critical Resistance will be hosting the Capital Campaign and is seeking a Capital Campaign Manager to secure the remaining $8 million required to powerfully complete the project within 3 years time. This position will be based in Oakland, CA, near Critical Resistance’s (CR) National Office and the building site.

Note: Due to COVID-19, 4400 project staff work both on site and remotely, with reassessment every six months based on COVID precautions and organizational protocols.

Building Purpose:

4400 Telegraph offers welcoming and inclusive offices, meeting and event spaces, kitchen and open access to basic facilities (water, bathrooms, food), with an aim to support those impacted/targeted by displacement, policing and prisons. We envision this to be a space of organizing, building community, collective care and joy.

Position Description:

Critical Resistance is looking for a Capital Campaign Manager for Building People Power to develop and implement strategies to raise $8 million to support its capital campaign and institutional priorities. This position will be responsible for all aspects of the capital campaign including enhancing the 2023-24 Capital Campaign fundraising plan, developing annual fundraising plans, then leading the execution of the Capital Campaign. Responsibilities include identification, cultivation and solicitation of major gifts and prospects; developing materials; coaching, coordinating, and training staff and volunteers on the Capital Campaign Committee and Fundraising team; working with the CR Development staff; tracking progress; and crafting internal and external Communications and Development updates on the Capital Campaign.

The Capital Campaign Manager is a highly motivated position, which reports directly to the CR Development Director, gives regular updates to the Building Project Manager, as well as other Building People Power/ 4400 Telegraph project staff and related consultants and volunteers. This is a full-time salaried position with benefits. This position is intended for a 3 year duration until it meets the goals of the capital campaign, and is responsible for building a grassroots donor and institutional support base for Building People Power’s future Development needs.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The tasks listed below describe the general nature and level of work performed. This is not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities and duties required.

Capital Campaign Management

  •  Develop and implement a comprehensive capital campaign strategy and plan to raise $8 million in 2 years time to fund the next 2-3 years of construction and renovation work at 4400 Telegraph, building off the capital campaign strategy plan developed by CR’s Development Director and key fundraising thought partners.
  • Collaborate with CR’s Development staff on making fundraising asks and coordinate CR participation in BPP fundraising plans.
  • Build and direct a Capital Campaign committee. Manage, coordinate and support Capital Campaign committee and Capital Campaign volunteers to execute the plan, overseeing the planning and direction of all campaign events and programs, including individual and foundation funds. Serve as the principal staffer, managing scheduling, agenda, facilitation and minutes for meetings.
  • Collaborate with contracted graphic designers and CR’s Development Director to produce campaign materials and communications for print, web and social media platforms.
  • Plan and maintain the Capital Campaign calendar, ensuring that it is coordinated with 4400 Programming activities, the progress of the renovation project, and does not conflict with existing CR program and Development calendars
  • Regularly assess progress toward benchmarks and goals and prepare regular presentations and reports for the Building Project Manager, CR Development Director and Capital Campaign Committee.
  • Manage Capital Campaign budget tracking and reporting. Submit income and expense documentation.
  • Manage the internal flow of information and campaign communication.
  • Manage all campaign gift correspondence in a donor database, including timely acknowledgments, pledge payment reminders, pledge agreements, and preparing and submitting reports to donors and those required by granting foundations and institutions.
  • Coordinate and manage the work of Capital Campaign-related contractors and other professionals as needed, such as graphic designers, videographers, venue hosts, printers, etc.

Prospecting and Solicitation:

  • Develop language consistent to BPP’s mission and CR’s vision of prison industrial complex abolition to advance the fundraising goals of campaign
  • Identify new and existing prospects and manage prospect lists. Work collaboratively with CR Development staff and Capital Campaign Committee to cultivate identified individuals and institutional prospects across strategy areas (individuals, foundations, special events).
  • Solicit major gifts and coach staff and volunteers on the Capital Campaign fundraising team to solicit major gifts.
  • Over time, build and manage a portfolio of donors and prospects with the capacity, interest, and inclination to make gifts of $10,000 or more.
  • Cultivate relationships with new prospects and current donors to the campaign through one-on-one relationship building, communications work, and events. Ensure donor acknowledgement opportunities, stewardship and, as appropriate, public recognition.
  • Track and manage progress on solicitations across the organization, providing follow up and 1:1 support for solicitors
  • Prepare and submit grant proposals, supported by the CR Development Director.
  • Evaluate and refine solicitation efforts as needed to help maximize donor success.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of professional fundraising experience, and/or a focus on capital campaigns or major gifts for 3-5 years.
  • Proven track record of successfully securing major gift support or grants, including experience completing and closing at least six figure asks.
  • Success leading and directing capital campaigns, including creating the materials for the campaign and the ability to manage the campaign budget.
  • Knowledge of capital campaign donor landscape, existing relationships are a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, analytical, and organizational skills, including strong writing skills and the ability to give and receive constructive feedback.
  • Ability to balance multiple responsibilities well, to set priorities, and follow work plans.
  • Personal qualities of strong work ethic, self-discipline, emotional intelligence, and diligence.
  • Experience coordinating, supervising and training volunteers and staff to meet fundraising goals. A team player with the ability to motivate others to stay accountable.
  • Commitment to prison industrial complex abolition.
  • Fluency with donor or contact management software (Salesforce experience a plus).

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

Salary range $100,000-$110,000, depending upon experience, with six weeks paid vacation, and an expansive benefits package. CR will also supply office workspace infrastructure or financial support for remote working needs during COVID-19. This is a three year position. However, the starting contract agreement is for the first six months to ensure the hire is a mutually good fit for Critical Resistance and the person hired.
