In the above picture, CR Portland members show solidarity with the ongoing resistance of the Chagossian people who demand the right to return to their home island of Diego Garcia – occupied by a US military base for the past 50 years. Clare Bayard, member of allied organization, Catalyst Project, will be traveling to Mauritius to attend an international conference on this struggle and brings with her these messages of solidarity. In an article from 2014, Bayard reiterates the demands of the Chagossian people, which we can see echoed globally by those still fighting colonialism and imperialism, stating “They demand closure and full cleanup of the base, complete decolonization of Mauritius, and the re-unification of the country and its people, and the right of return and full reparations for displaced Chagossian-Mauritians.” Read more here.
