As organizations in commitment to the safety and wellbeing of our communities, we stand united across Alameda, Contra Costa and San Francisco counties IN OPPOSITION TO ANY MORE SPENDING ON JAIL EXPANSION AND RENOVATION in any of our three counties and across California. Our opposition includes the pending proposals to the Board of State and Community Corrections from Contra Costa and San Francisco counties as well as the ongoing efforts in Alameda county to expand Santa Rita through BSCC funding. We reject jail expansion. We also call for an end to all leasing of jail beds to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the leasing of jail capacity to other counties.

We support reducing the overcrowding in jails through increased pre-arrest and pre-trial diversion, the decriminalization of our communities, ceasing cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and bail reform.

We support increasing mental health services in our communities, not caging people who are suffering. Jails have been proven to deteriorate mental health — even when they claim to treat it — and we demand that funding from the BSCC and the counties be invested in life-affirming ways by supporting affordable housing, education, and health care.

In commitment to all Bay Area communities we will not be pitted against one another. We stand together against state and county funding being wasted on jailing our loved ones and fellow community members, who are disproportionately immigrants, transgender people, people of color, and people with mental health needs.

Together we demand services, not cells; care, not cages; and more justice, not more jails.
