Critical Resistance Oakland has been working diligently since 2013 against jailing and criminalization in San Francisco through No New SF Jail Coalition. In 2015, the coalition successfully defeated plans for a $300 million new jail proposal in San Francisco. On May 12th, 2020, the coalition won another historic victory by passing an ordinance through the Board of Supervisors that requires the city to permanently close County Jail 4 at 850 Bryant St. by November 1st of 2020, without out-of-county transfers or other jail expansion. Read No New SF Jail Coalition’s newsletter for more about the victory here.

Through the rest of 2020, Critical Resistance Oakland will remain in the No New SF Jail Coalition, and continue to work towards abolishing jailing and criminalization by monitoring the implementation of the ordinance and closure of 850 Bryant, while continuing to mobilize communities and allied organizations through political education, resource sharing, skill building and other actions for a jail-free San Francisco.
